Duration 120 minutes
Frequency Once a year
Questions 68

Overview

For students planning to pursue an MBA, understanding how business schools assess applicants is an important part of preparing for the Common Admission Test (CAT). The examination presents candidates with reading passages, numerical problems and sets of information that require careful interpretation. Conducted annually by an Indian Institute of Management, CAT provides scores used by participating IIMs and other management institutions during their admission processes. The paper covers three areas: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Aptitude (QA). Each area requires a different approach, making balanced preparation essential.

What happens after CAT is equally important. A candidate’s result includes sectional and overall percentiles that show their performance relative to other test takers. Business schools use these results according to their individual selection policies. Some institutions also evaluate graduation marks, earlier academic records, work experience and performance in subsequent selection rounds. Consequently, obtaining a particular percentile does not ensure an interview invitation or admission. Students benefit from reviewing the requirements of their preferred institutes early, so their examination goals reflect the admission opportunities they wish to pursue.

At Abhyaas, through IIMPrep, students can explore CAT preparation options designed to support learning across the examination’s three sections. The programmes help aspirants organise their studies, practise different question formats and evaluate their progress through assessments. Students can choose a suitable preparation path based on their current abilities and available study time. By combining subject preparation with mock-test analysis and an understanding of IIM selection procedures, aspirants can approach both the examination and the subsequent admission stages with greater clarity.

Preparation Tips

Effective preparation strategies for success

1. Begin with a baseline assessment. Identify which section currently limits your overall performance.
2. Improve reading consistency. Read unfamiliar subjects and practise extracting the main argument.
3. Build a dependable arithmetic foundation. Strength in basic quantitative concepts supports more complex problems.
4. Practise complete DILR sets. Learn to organise conditions before solving individual questions.
5. Set sectional performance goals. Do not rely exclusively on an overall mock score.
6. Learn to abandon unproductive questions. Spending too long on one problem can reduce opportunities elsewhere.
7. Track accuracy alongside attempts. More attempted questions do not necessarily produce a better score.
8. Analyse every mock. A detailed review can reveal more than taking another test immediately.
9. Compare mock percentiles cautiously. Different mock providers use different test-taking populations.
10. Practise under realistic conditions. Use timed tests and avoid unnecessary interruptions.
11. Study your preferred IIMs' admission policies. Understanding selection criteria can help you plan beyond CAT.
12. Prepare for the post-CAT process. Keep academic documents ready and monitor institute applications and interview schedules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this exam

No. Institutes publish their own admission policies and category-wise requirements.

Not necessarily. Institutes may consider academics, work experience, interviews and other published selection factors.

The standard examination duration is 120 minutes.

Review your academic subjects, projects, work experience and reasons for pursuing management education. Be prepared to discuss your career goals and explain important decisions in your educational or professional journey. Practise communicating clearly without memorising artificial responses.

Begin by taking a full-length diagnostic test and reviewing your performance in VARC, DILR and QA. Identify whether your difficulties come from weak concepts, low accuracy or slow question-solving. Give additional attention to your weakest area while maintaining regular practice in the other two sections.

There is no fixed attempt count that guarantees a particular percentile. The outcome depends on question difficulty, accuracy, marking rules and other candidates' performance. Students should focus on selecting questions they can solve reliably rather than attempting a predetermined number.
